    About the Author
Robert and his wife Kim live in Arizona.

    From AudioFile
One of many in the Rich Dad series, Kiyosaki's abridged pep talk about financial wellness is a rapid read as narrated by Dave Mallow. Speaking with gusto, Mallow evokes the entrepreneur in everyone with rapid sentences that are targeted towards action. The summaries at the end of each chapter are read more slowly, allowing the reader to process the sometimes detailed information. In the bulk of the discussion Mallow moves between financial explanations and personal anecdotes in a warm and understanding tone. In addition to the summaries, each chapter ends with thinking points, some of which are worded to incite the reader to action. The smooth delivery helps make contemplating major financial decisions less daunting. M.R. © AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright © AudioFile, Portland, Maine

    A Great Starting point!5
I am one of the masses that received no financial education in school. I am currently going for my MBA and Robert T. Kiyosake has helped me understand "money" more than any class so far. The value goes beyond the read, and is something you will carry with you through all of your major decisions.

    A bit of humility wouldn't hurt3
Good Grief. This gentleman and Donald Trump are meant for one another.

You can be correct and nauseating at the same time Mr. Kiyosaki. Get over yourself and burn your Tony Robbins tapes so people can relate. Then both your Rich Dad and Poor Dad will be proud of you.

Very little meat on this book2
I found very little meat in this book. I agree with other reviewers that the valuable information could have been presented in a few pages.

This is the second Kiyosaki book I read. The first Kiyosaki book I read, Real Estate Riches: How to Become Rich Using Your Banker's Money, was much more informative.

    Amazon.com Review
This is a deep, magical, densely captivating book about space, our homes, how we live in them, and how dwellings and space affect us; it is as much a book of philosophy as a work of serious literature. It requires careful, preferably leisurely reading, with the possibility of moments to pause and digest and re-read the words. It will change the way you look at your home and your life, providing a deeper, more insightful relationship with the spaces you occupy.

    English, please1
I don't know if the problem is in the content of the book, or in the translation, but the book was almost incomprehensible. Unfortunately, I don't speak French, so I can't read the original and compare them, but I suspect it is the translation, which appeared a bit stilted and unnatural (similar to translations of Frederick Bastiat's The Law, or Pierre Boulle's Planet of the Apes, both of which were oddly worded, although easily readable, and Bastiat wrote more than 150 years ago).

Maybe the translator didn't quite understand the topic, or have a conversational grasp of the English language, either of which would make translating difficult. I almost picked up my Strunk & White's Elements of Style to review their readability formula just to quantify how dense this book was, but restrained myself.

To the reviewers I read before buying this book, now I understand why a number of them wrote things like, "you have to be able to sit back and ponder the book, savoring the words before digesting them." I took this as a sign that there were deep meanings that mesmerized the reader, and looked forward to it. No. To translate that phrase into common English, it means, "the translator has an Oxford English Dictionary and he's going to use it."

    Whats the big deal2
I don't get why this is the bible of architects. Its boring as hell. Sure people are affected by the spaces they inhabit for various conditioning reasons. OK thats obvious but do I need to read a whole book written in pompous philospeak to learn that.

Honestly I put it down half way. Too boring and too many other things to read. Life is short.

    very pleased5
Book itself was in great condition, and was waiting at home for me sooner than expected.

After a heartfelt introduction by the authors, Eric Conger reads the now famous parable with perfect tempo and emotional pitch. The basic lesson is on how to concisely communicate goals, praise, and correction. Though focused on method, the underlying message is that people want to be managed and tend to flounder when their efforts are not directed and nurtured. The program is a reminder that quality work doesn't happen without organized and disciplined leadership. People need challenging and worthwhile goals, respect, emotional security, and a sense of being part of a community that makes them feel connected and invested. That this shouldn't take huge amounts of time is the key contribution of this audio, which ought to be on everyone's "top 10" list of management guides. Readers confuse "simple" with "profound"1
This book is definitely simple, but definitely not profound, timeless OR classic.

This is a rather short book -- readable in a single sitting -- and yet it is still mostly fluff. It could easily be condensed to 1/3 of its original length or less without losing any meaning.

My biggest gripe with the book is the format: it is written as a fictional narrative, with a contrived storyline that reads like it was translated from some other language. I really can't stand this style of writing. Why introduce these characters at all in a non-fiction book? Especially if they aren't based on real-world events, aren't developed at all, and don't serve any allegorical purpose?

I, on the other hand, believe that the word is a very large and complex place. Real knowledge can be condensed down to some set of first principles, but over time you only gain understanding by understanding the subtle complexity that underlies everything inside and around us.

The principles in this book are valid -- but almost to the point of obviousness.

    1) Set goals with your employees (to communicate expectations and set evaluation criteria).
    2) Reward your employees when they do something right.
    3) Reprimand your employees when they do something wrong.

Sure, this is a jumping off point for some extremely clueless managers, but it also glosses over a lot of subtle complexity involved in motivating people.

To my mind, one of the single most obvious things you can do to motivate people is to flip the question around: ask your employees what motivates *them*. This is going to be different for everybody. Money is an important motivator, but some people are also interested in job security; some employees want to be challenged; others want to work on something meaningful, and so on. You really need to understand these various sources of motivation in order to have any hope of keeping them productive.

This book, however, presents a binary view of motivation: either you encourage, or else you reprimand. (I suppose there's a third state suggested, but not explicitly described: not communicating at all.)

As a final nit to pick: for some reason, the unenlightened managers in this book are characterized as having messy offices and calendars that are booked up heavily. The one minute manager, on the other hand, has a perfectly tidy office, and is rarely too busy to take walk-in appointments. This distinction isn't explained in the book at all, but it seems to me to be a subconscious message that one minute managers are also magically transformed into tidy, efficient workers who have a lot of free time to philosophize. Indeed, the student in this book evolves into this one minute manager mold and magically his office is cleaned up, too. I'd love to read a "one minute office organizer" book. Let me know when they write that one.

Should be on all Manager's must read lists.5
An excellent must read for all managers. Easy to read once a year to keep on track.

Wise Old Man Advises Wide-Eyed Young Man - Enough Already!2
Kenneth Blanchard and Spencer Johnson birthed a monster writing style when they published THE ONE MINUTE MANAGER, "The Runaway #1 National Bestseller!" -- and that style is surrounding a hideously boring topic with clichés, adverbs, adjectives, redundancies, dull characters, and exclamation points. The book is then called a nonfiction fable. Hunh?

When this book came out in 1981 it used a new, perhaps fresh, approach to teaching management skills, but since then it has been copied and copied and copied ... when it should be put in a cage. It's time to stop dumbing down and start smartening up books for managers. Enough already!

Note: You'll only need 1 minute to get what's useful out of this book.

Why Don't Your Eyelashes Grow?: Curious Questions Kids Ask About the Human Body

Ever wondered what that small dewdrop thing is in the back of your throat? Or why you hiccup? Why Don’t Your Eyelashes Grow? addresses every weird question about your body that you could think of—or didn’t even think to ask. Prompted by the brain stumpers her own children and patients have asked her over the years, Dr. Beth Ann Ditkoff compiled a list of curious medical questions. In this book, she reveals the mysteries of the human body (gross, funny, or ugly!) to children and adults.

With eye-opening questions, like “Why do toenails grow slower than fingernails?” and “Why do you have earwax?” to weird oddities, like “Why do some people have dimples?” and “Why do you get a headache when you eat ice cream too quickly?” Ditkoff also explains hilarious and bizarre anatomy “situations” that every curious kid wonders, from “If you put a pea up your nose, will it go into your brain?” to “If you eat Pop Rocks candy and drink soda at the same time, will your stomach explode?” With expert explanations throughout, Why Don’t Your Eyelashes Grow? is an entertaining potpourri of fun factoids packed with real information.

I got this book for a couple of little girls, age 6, because it got such rave reviews. While it does have great information, I was disappointed to find that it has no illustrations, just straight text. It would be so much more fun for kids if it did have at least little sketches to illustrate the information, especially since some of the answers are a bit technical for younger ones.

    great gift5
My grandchildren love this book. The little ones know that all of their questions will be answered and the big ones just love to read it.

With the aid of daughters Andrea and Julia, Beth Ann Ditkoff, M. D. has created an informal guide to the human body. Why Don't Your Eyelashes Grow? is filled with fun trivia and those sensitive questions children like to ask while grownups flounder around for answers. Even if we know the answers, as parents we sometimes have trouble forming that knowledge into a coherent response. Thanks to Ditkoff, it's all compiled within the pages of this handy book for easy reference.

The book is divided into four main sections, with an additional section for Bonus Body Trivia. "Your Body 101" leads the reader through basic facts, like why humans have earwax and what an Adam's Apple is. In "The Weird, The Ugly and the Downright Gross" Ditkoff tackles yuckier topics like nose hair, warts, and dandruff. "Body Afflictions and Everyday Strange Things That Can Happen" covers the many strange responses the human body has to external stimuli.

"Urban Myth and What If?" is greatly comprised of adages you likely heard from your mother at some point. Readers can find out if it really is bad to crack your knuckles or if you'll actually see better if you eat carrots. This can be an invaluable section for children because it will reveal if your parents are really putting you on about swallowing your gum or drinking 8 glasses of water per day. The truth is revealed!

The bonus trivia section seems dispensable. It contains only a sampling of questions compared to the first four sections. These are questions that could have been easily categorized within the earlier sections.

Almost every topic has a single dedicated page. Each one is referenced individually in the table of contents for retrieval. The writing is quite scientific at times and might have to be reworded for younger children, but the questions are certainly familiar. Even adult readers have probably wondered about a few of them now and then. Ditkoff relates in the introduction how many of her own patients, as well as friends and family, frequently ask her questions similar to those in her book.

Most of us go through life without fully understanding the mechanics of our bodies. Why Don't Your Eyelashes Grow? is a great way to familiarize ourselves with the complicated organic machines we rely on every day. Then when those curious inquisitors we know as our children stump us with new queries, we just might be able to dig up a meritable explanation.

No More Mondays: Fire Yourself -- and Other Revolutionary Ways to Discover Your True Calling at Work

No More Mondays: Fire Yourself -- and Other Revolutionary Ways to Discover Your True Calling at Work

Is Your Job Making You “Stupid”?

Adam Smith, author of The Wealth of Nations, once wrote that a person who spends his life performing the same repetitive tasks “generally becomes as stupid and ignorant as it is possible for a human creature to become.” Wow! Now that’s not a pretty picture. Unfortunately, much of our work today consists of those boring, repetitive tasks.

But maybe you’re one of the many who have gotten caught up in thinking work is just something you do to support your weekends. Work is that necessary evil, a means to an end, or just a curse from God. You probably take your role of providing for yourself and those depending on you seriously. But you don’t expect to enjoy your work—you just do what has to be done.

Only now you’re seeing that even loyalty and dependability bring no guarantees. Lately you’ve seen coworkers who have been let go after years of faithful service. Perhaps your entire industryhas been shaken by outsourcing or changing technology. Maybe you’re tired of the long commute and being tied to your desk when you know you could make your own hours and still be productive. You may have ideas stirring that you think could create new income and time freedom.

But here comes another Monday. Maybe feeling trapped is just the reality of the way things are. Doesn’t everyone dread Mondays? Doesn’t every responsible person just bury their dreams and passions in exchange for getting a paycheck?

Absolutely not! All of us, no matter how old we are or what kind of work we’re doing, can learn to bring the same excitement to our jobs that we bring to whatever we love to do on our days off. I believe that each one of us can pursue work that is a reflection of our best selves—a true fulfillment of our callings.

    No More Mondays
will show you that meaningful work really is within your grasp. And once you’ve opened the door and seen all the exciting career opportunities that await you—whether you decide to revolutionize your current job or launch a new career altogether—you’ll find you can’t go back to the old way of working.”

    From No More Mondays

For everyone who dreads going to work on Monday mornings, inspiring advice on how to find fulfilling work in an uncertain age.

    Do you hate Mondays?

If so, what's keeping you at your current job?

If you said a steady paycheck and the promise of a secure retirement, then you're in for a big disappointment. In today's volatile economy, there is nothing safe about punching the clock for a job you hate.

As beloved talk-show host and bestselling author Dan Miller reveals, the only way to find true security is by following your calling and then finding or creating work that matches that calling and passion.

No More Mondays’s practical, inspirational advice speaks to people looking for guidance on how to launch a new career or business, those who want to stay in their current jobs and give the old 9-to-5 model a twenty-first-century makeover, and managers desperate to understand the way people want to work today. For all of them, Dan Miller's message is loud and clear: If you're one of those people who dread going to work on Mondays, do something about it!

    Don’t Be “Stupid”

William and his wife, Bonnie, were smiling when they walked into my office, but it was clear they had a lot on their minds. They were worried about their financial future and eager for advice. Both were attractive, vibrant professionals who were clearly confident and successful. At fifty–three years old, William had been a commercial pilot with a major airline for twenty–seven years. His annual salary was more than $200,000, and years earlier he had calculated that, with his investments and his pension, he could retire in high style by age fifty–six. But then his investments took a big dive and the airline defaulted on its pension plan. Suddenly it seemed uncertain that he’d even have a job for three more years, let alone the money to stop working.

William and Bonnie are not alone in having their career path and financial plans disappear within months. The status of most employee pension plans sits somewhere between threatened and dead and gone. IBM has announced it will discontinue pension benefits starting in 2008 and shift to 401(k) plans that will save the company as much as $3 billion over the next few years. Following the lead of United and US Airways, other major airlines have proposed dumping their pensions in bankruptcy. Allstate Insurance has “invited” all 6,200 of its agents to become independent contractors, giving up their health insurance and pension benefits in the process. There is no way the federal Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation can back up these folding pension plans. The PBGC is already on the hook for $62.3 billion in expected pension payouts with only $390 billion in its accounts. So where does this leave you and me?

    Revolutionary Thinking

As I told William and Bonnie, if you think like a traditional “employee,” you are placing yourself in jeopardy. We are witnessing the dawn of a revolution in which each one of us will become completely responsible for our own income, benefits, and retirement. But don’t assume this is a negative transition—in fact, what I’m going to reveal in these pages is that never before have we had so many opportunities to take control over the shape of our careers. Never before has the potential for fulfilling work and true wealth been greater. Sure, the times, they are a–changing. But you can stay ahead of the inevitable changes—and benefit from them—by seeing the wealth of new opportunities available to you and planning for them now.

While my use of the word Revolutionary may conjure up the idea of donning a pointy hat and bringing a cannon in to work tomorrow, that’s not exactly what I have in mind. The dictionary defines revolutionary as “radically new or innovative; outside or beyond established procedure, principles, etc.,” as in a revolutionary discovery. It’s revolutionary to become more than simply complacent in your workplace. After all, the traditional employee does not often embrace radically new or innovative thinking—and frequently does not think much at all. The traditional employee does what he or she is expected to do, completes established procedures, and makes sure things are done today the same way they were done yesterday. Revolutionaries pave their own ways; they stretch the rules and think of ways to do things better. A brief warning: Revolutionaries may be seen as threats to the status quo. I even have a close friend who was fired for “thinking too much.” In traditional work positions, the requirements of the job are frequently imposed on you, regardless of your passions, calling, or unique skills. But what kind of way is this to spend the majority of your waking life? Wasn’t my friend’s firing really a kind of liberation?

And what about you? Does your work really allow you to make the best use of your abilities, your personality traits, your values and dreams? If you were to pull the paycheck blindfold off your eyes, would you see work that's authentically fulfilling?

Have You Made the Most of the Life You Have?
    • Are you where you thought you’d be at this stage of your life?
    • Have you ever had a sense of “calling”?
    • How did you hear that calling?
    • Is your work a fulfillment of your calling?
    • Do you go home at night with a sense of meaning, purpose, and accomplishment?
    • If nothing changed in your life over the next five years, would that be okay?
    • If you want different results next year, what are you willing to change about what you are doing now?

Within the pages of No More Mondays, you will discover new opportunities and rediscover things about yourself that will provide you with a sense of meaning, accomplishment, and fulfillment. This book is filled with practical advice on how to move from traditional work to an authentic—and perhaps revolutionary—investment of your time and energy. And as you become a Revolutionary, you will find the preceding questions much easier to answer.

Success is never an accident. It typically starts as imagination, becomes a dream, stimulates a goal, grows into a plan of action—which then inevitably meets with opportunity. Don’t get stuck along the way.

Sit Straight and Stay in the Lines . . . Why?

Unfortunately, from the first day of school, our academic system has been teaching us to work in a workplace that is disappearing. We were told to sit up straight, talk only when it was our turn, walk in an orderly fashion to the lunchroom, follow instructions, and color inside the lines. These instructions encourage the mind–set we can refer to as “paycheck mentality.” As children, we learn that, if we go by the rules, do what we’re told, we will be rewarded. Do what the teacher says, and you’ll get good grades. Naturally these lessons prepare us for a paycheck mentality: Show up for work, don’t make waves, and put in your time. With these skills you can get a paycheck, but you probably won’t be equipped for the revolution in the workplace that will liberate you from the old way of working: mind–numbing and often poorly paid production– and knowledge–based work models. By production work I mean the repetitive work done in factories and on assembly lines. By knowledge work I mean the kind that involves managing data and analyzing information. Not only are these models outdated and soul-stripping, but they’re endangered by technology and easily outsourced. Revolutionaries, by contrast, may change what they do every day; they look for results, they don’t watch for how many hours they have worked, and they work in ways that may be unique and surprising.

He who rejects change is the architect of decay. The only human institution which rejects progress is the cemetery. —Harold Wilson

According to the late Peter Drucker, we are reaching the end of a forty–year period (1970-2010) that has brought more change than the world has ever seen—and there's more where that came from. As we approach the end of this time frame, the speed of change is increasing. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics is now predicting that 50 percent of the jobs we will have in the next ten years have not yet been created. Bureau experts are further predicting that in another five years only 50 percent of the American workforce will be employees. We are seeing an explosion of new work models, including consultants, independent contractors, electronic immigrants, teleworkers, and contingency laborers. While in past years entrepreneurs were expected to rent buildings and hire employees, these days they may operate Internet businesses that require neither. Today’s temps may work from home and design their own schedules. These are not the characteristics of the workplace we were led to expect by our parents and grandparents. These are not the kinds of workplaces where the loyalty of a company guarantees us a weekly paycheck in exchange for our time.

If terms like contingency worker or temp sound unappealing, you can create your own. What would you like to be called? How about “creative,” “free,” “imaginative,” “innovative,” “original,” “ingenious,” “inspired,” “pioneering,” “groundbreaking,” or “clever”? Why don’t you create your own original word for your ideal work environment?

A few years ago I decided that instead of entrepreneur, the term Eaglepreneur had a nicer ring to it and accentuated the way I differ from a traditional entrepreneur. I liked many aspects of what is implied by the term entrepreneur, but I did not envision myself as another Bill Gates or Sam Walton or dream of managing twenty thousand employees. I enjoy working independently and making my own decisions, but I’d rather not be bogged down by the traditional business elements of a bricks–and–mortar establishment with employees, leases, and sign permits. Therefore, I decided I was an Eaglepreneur. Go ahead, check it out—http://www.eaglepreneur.com—I have the domain. I claimed that title, and you can do the same with your own. As a Revolutionary, you too will recognize the new opportunities to custom–build your own fulfilling work.

Yes, the workplace is changing—and yes, the career ladder is broken. Today’s career path may look more like a labyrinth, in which every time you thought you were heading straight toward the goal, you reach a turn in the road and need to change direction to continue your progress. Needs to Rearrange the Chapters3
Great book. But a HUGE problem was that in order to absorb this book you need to know you passion (calling) in life. Well he doesn't really go in depth in to that until almost half way through the book. This was TOTALLY ANNOYING. For the first half of the book I was trying to figure out what I am good at/love, and could not absorb any of the nuggets in the first half because I felt like I needed to have a better idea of my calling. Then earlier in the book he says that maybe your an inventor, and has DOZENS of examples of people inventing stuff and getting rich off of it. Then at the end of the book he says something like only 1% of people make their wealth from acting, sports, and inventions! It seemed to get my hopes up and then dash it at the last chapter. Still a good book, but I say if your starting a new invention/freelance/business, to start SLOW, don't quit your day job, start very slowly...and read Dave Ramsey's The Total Money Makeover.

    Wonderful encouragement5
Got this for husband who plans retirement in a couple of years - he is looking forward to new opportunities and doing something he LOVES for a change!

    Book for Entrepreneurs 3
Quick and entertaining read, but I thought this book would also help me to succeed in my current work environment but it is 99% focused on entrepreneurs.

    From Library Journal
Hard on the heels of Fuller Torrey and Michael B. Knable's excellent Surviving Manic Depression: A Manual on Bipolar Disorder for Patients, Families and Providers (LJ 1/02) comes another strong title. Both books cover the origins, symptoms, and treatments for bipolar disorder, with emphasis on current medications. The main difference between the two books is that the current title by Miklowitz (psychology, Univ. of Colorado, Boulder) is intended for patients. It spends a good deal of time on issues exclusive to the sufferer how to come to terms with the diagnosis, whom to confide in, and how to recognize one's own mood swings. More concise in its treatment of the issues just mentioned, Torrey and Knable's title is addressed to a more general audience, spends more time reviewing the scientific evidence concerning the origins of the disease, and has a much more useful resource list. On the whole, Surviving Manic Depression would be the first choice for most libraries, with Miklowitz's book recommended for patient education libraries and medium and large public libraries. "Dr. Miklowitz's book is both impressive and very humane. His lucid, multidimensional exploration of the patient's experience and his practical and empowering self-management techniques go far toward promoting stability. This book should be required reading for people with the disorder, their family members, and the physicians and therapists who treat them."--Demitri F. Papolos, MD, and Janice Papolos, authors of Overcoming Depression and The Bipolar Child

"When Miklowitz started his work, it seemed paradoxical to many that psychosocial approaches, including illness education, could affect the course of an illness which is incontrovertibly genetic and biological in its origins. It was Miklowitz's pioneering research that proved this assumption wrong. Now he has provided patients and families with just the right psychoeducational tool--an authoritative and eminently readable book about bipolar illness and its treatment."--Frederick K. Goodwin, MD, coauthor of Manic-Depressive Illness, Research Professor of Psychiatry; Director, Center on Neuroscience, Medical Progress and Society, George Washington University Medical Center

"...the author's expertise, compassion, and experience are evident throughout....well worth reading and remembering."--NAMI Advocate

"...the book provides solid background information for school psychologists who may need to provide support to parents or colleagues who have bipolar disorder, and should do much to generate a more sympathetic understanding....School psychologists who feel completely comfortable with their understanding of bipolar disorder may wish to have a copy of this book on their shelf to loan out to others."--Communiqué

"The Bipolar Disorder Survival Guide is a thorough, research-based book for consumers who would like to learn about their illness and how to manage it."--Reintegration Today

"The book offers a wealth of material that can help demystify the disorder. Miklowitz methodically explains the disease, its symptoms and diagnosis, moves on to cogent explanations of its possible causes ('genetics, biology, ans stress'), then spends most of the book offering advice on how to manage it. Bunny Williams' Point of View: Three Decades of Decorating Elegant and Comfortable Houses

An Affair with a House continues to be a top seller for STC, with more than 45,000 copies in print
Shows readers how to realize their own taste and design preferences

You learn from people with great taste,” says Bunny Williams. She should know. As a novice, Williams worked for legendary decorators Sister Parish and Albert Hadley, absorbing everything she could of their peerless design sense. Striking out on her own, she rose to the top rank of the interior design profession, where she has stylishly remained for the last 30 years. Now, it’s our turn to learn from her.

Part memoir and part how-to manual, Bunny Williams’ Point of View showcases many of the drop-dead chic but always cozily comfortable residences whose interiors Williams has designed during her astounding career. As Williams tells it, every design decision she makes is based on a bedrock principle: “Knowing what you value is essential.” Her conviction that every person’s home should manifest their personality guides her as she creates environments that fit each client precisely, “like a couture suit.”

By showing you how to plan and then accomplish that plan for each room of your house, Williams inspires you to take account of your own values—and to realize your personal vision of how you want to live. As she says about the book: “My point of view will help you discover yours.”

    excellent5
I've had to buy this book three times since my first two copies were taken away from me by friends. It has great pictures, great texts, and is full of inspiring ideas....the kind of book you go back to over and over again.

Not up to previous book 2
This is the second book by the author that I have read, and own. The previous book outlines her restoration of her residence and includes her decorating tips and outlines her prowess in this field. This book was more of a 'showcase' for certain projects, all of which did not provide the detail and description that was forthcoming in her previous book. While the photographs are beautiful of stunningly designed rooms, the lack of details made it somewhat boring and repetitive.

The Divine is in the Details5
In viewing interior design books, I long ago made a concerted effort not to be intimidated by perceived grandness nor deceived by photo-enhanced perfection.
If one chooses to take from it, the genius of Ms. Williams is in the fine points. One need only to breakdown the rooms, the photos, and see the details: relationship of objects; color balance; vignettes; personal touches, etc. Whether it is a set table or the marriage of fine sculpture to simple souvenirs, the secret is in the tiny tales told.
For the discerning eye, for the discriminating, for the secure, and the critical reader, this is a feast for the eye and the mind.

    A science classic5
For anyone interested in the progress of science and civilisation, this book is one of the essential classics. Not only does it lay the foundations of modern biology, it is a rare example of how scientific writing should be done.

Darwin anticipated a strong reaction to his ideas and their implications, so he took great care to write his book with exemplary clarity and self discipline. With great humility, he presents the culmination of his life's work. He looks at the objections at each step, and treats them with respect and grace as he counters them. A respect that he never received from his opponents. He never claimed to have the full and final picture, but laid a solid foundation in the way Newton did for physics.

Even forgetting the brilliance of the central insight, as an example of a thorough, clear, and reasoned scientific thesis, it would be hard to find better.

This book is a living part of our history and heritage. It's importance to our future is incalculable, as it teaches us that we are all related to each other and to all life on Earth. What better reason to start treating all of our fellow creatures with a little more compassion.

Among the modern industrialized countries, there is generally little "controversy" about Darwin's ideas (there will still be a few Flat-Earthers anywhere). The general principles of evolution have been accepted for many decades by more than 90% of the population in most developed countries. Only in America is the idea still controversial on a significant scale. Perhaps this needs more focus in the education system.

You know what's an interesting fiction?5
You know what's an even more interesting fiction? The Bible. I look at reviews to know about the quality of the product, not the ignorance of people. Please don't come here and give a bad review to this well-crafted presentation of a great book because you're so insecure, you call evolution a fictionalized story. I find it hilarious that people who point out the "lack of evidence" for evolution are always Christians who believe the Bible is the word of God! Wow.

    An interesting fable1
This book is a very interesting work of fiction. Its too bad that so many people take it seriously, though. Darwin had a great imagination, but with no scientific evidence to support it, its just a fable. I can't believe people are so gullible as to believe the things written in here. I'm judging it as a work of fiction. Its imaginative, but its lacking. One star.

This professional guide is so complete covers all the issues you might get to face as a new teacher!!! Great ideas to handle all types of exams!!! The images, charts, clues and advices are great!

    Questionable Advice2
Because it is written by a teacher who seems to have such a wonderful, loving attitude towards teaching and students, I wanted -- truly wanted -- to offer only a positive review on this book. The truth is, however, that -- as a 20 year veteran of teaching -- I recognize that there is so much advice given in this book that goes against educational research, that I simply cannot recommend it to any teacher. Some of the comments related to grading, setting up the classroom, curriculum design, etc. go against what we know about how kids learn. A better resource related to how to set up an effective classroom might be Harry Wong's First Days of School -- or for someone trying to better understand the research, I'd recommend Stiggins, Marzano, Wiggins, McTigh, Tomlinson, or Jensen.

The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization

The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization

The Lexus and the Olive Tree: Understanding Globalization

From one of our most perceptive commentators and winner of the National Book Award, a comprehensive look at the new world of globalization, the international system that, more than anything else, is shaping world affairs today.

As the Foreign Affairs columnist for The New York Times, Thomas L. Friedman has traveled the globe, interviewing people from all walks of contemporary life: Brazilian peasants in the Amazon rain forest, new entrepreneurs in Indonesia, Islamic students in Teheran, and the financial wizards on Wall Street and in Silicon Valley.

Now Friedman has drawn on his years on the road to produce an engrossing and original look at globalization. Globalization, he argues, is not just a phenomenon and not just a passing trend. It is the international system that replaced the Cold War system; the new, well-greased, interconnected system: Globalization is the integration of capital, technology, and information across national borders, in a way that is creating a single global market and, to some degreee, a global village. Simply put, one can't possibly understand the morning news or one's own investments without some grasp of the system. Just one example: During the Cold War, we reached for the hot line between the White House and the Kremlin--a symbol that we were all divided but at least the two superpowers were in charge. In the era of globalization, we reach for the Internet--a symbol that we are all connected but nobody is totally in charge.

With vivid stories and a set of original terms and concepts, Friedman offers readers remarkable access to his unique understanding of this new world order, and shows us how to see this new system. He dramatizes the conflict of "the Lexus and the olive tree"--the tension between the globalization system and ancient forces of culture, geography, tradition, and community. He also details the powerful backlash that globalization produces among those who feel brutalized by it, and he spells out what we all need to do to keep the system in balance. Finding the proper balance between the Lexus and the olive tree is the great drama of he globalization era, and the ultimate theme of Friedman's challenging, provocative book--essential reading for all who care about how the world really works.

    Amazon.com Review
One day in 1992, Thomas Friedman toured a Lexus factory in Japan and marveled at the robots that put the luxury cars together. That evening, as he ate sushi on a Japanese bullet train, he read a story about yet another Middle East squabble between Palestinians and Israelis. And it hit him: Half the world was lusting after those Lexuses, or at least the brilliant technology that made them possible, and the other half was fighting over who owned which olive tree.

Friedman, the well-traveled New York Times foreign-affairs columnist, peppers The Lexus and the Olive Tree with stories that illustrate his central theme: that globalization--the Lexus--is the central organizing principle of the post-cold war world, even though many individuals and nations resist by holding onto what has traditionally mattered to them--the olive tree.

Problem is, few of us understand what exactly globalization means. As Friedman sees it, the concept, at first glance, is all about American hegemony, about Disneyfication of all corners of the earth. But the reality, thank goodness, is far more complex than that, involving international relations, global markets, and the rise of the power of individuals (Bill Gates, Osama Bin Laden) relative to the power of nations.

No one knows how all this will shake out, but The Lexus and the Olive Tree is as good an overview of this sometimes brave, sometimes fearful new world as you'll find. --Lou Schuler

    From Kirkus Reviews
A brilliant guidebook to the new world of ``globalization'' by Pulitzer-winning New York Times columnist Friedman (From Beirut to Jerusalem, 1988). Like El Nio, globalization is blamed for anything and everything, but few understand just what it really is. In simplest terms, Friedman defines globalization as the world integration of finance markets, nation states, and technologies within a free- market capitalism on a scale never before experienced. Driving it all is what he calls the Electronic Herd, the faceless buyers and sellers of stocks, bonds, and currencies, and multinational corporations investing wherever and whenever the best opportunity presents itself. It is a pitiless systemrichly rewarding winners, harshly punishing losersbut contradictory as well. For nations and individuals willing to take the risk, globalization offers untold opportunity, yet in the process, as the Electronic Herd scavenges the world like locusts in the search for profit, globalization threatens to destroy both cultural heterogeneity and environmental diversity. The human drive for enrichment (the Lexus) confronts the human need for identity and community (the olive tree). The success of globalization, Friedman contends, depends on how well these goals can be satisfied at one and the same time. He believes they can be, but dangers abound. If nation states sacrifice too much of their identity to the dictates of the Electronic Herd, a backlash, a nihilistic rejection of globalization, can occur. If nation states ignore these dictates, they face impoverishment; there simply is no other game in town. Friedmans discussion is wonderfully accessible, clarifying the complex with enlightening stories that simplify but are never simplistic. There are flaws, to be sure. He is perhaps overly optimistic on the ability of the market forces of globalization to correct their own excesses, such as environmental degradation. Overall, though, he avoids the Panglossian overtones that mar so much of the literature on globalization. Artful and opinionated, complex and cantankerous; simply the best book yet written on globalization. (First printing 100,000) (Author tour) -- Copyright ©1999, Kirkus Associates, LP. "A brilliant guide to the here and now."--The New York Times Book Review

"An owner's manual for a globalized world."--USA Today

"A spirited and imaginative exploration of our new order of economic globalization.... Not only clear but interesting, not only interesting but necessary to us--first-rate."
    --The New York Times

"A wellspring of economic common sense that will innoculate its readers against the 'globaloney' so prevalent in popular discussions of the subject.... Readers in search of a window onto the problems of the cyberspace-driven 'virtual world economy' of the twenty-first century are unlikely to find a better place to start."--Foreign Affairs

"This is an important book; not since Nicholas Negroponte's Being Digital has a volume come along that so well explains the technical and financial ether we are all swimming through.... There is hardly a page in the book without an underlineable passage."--Salon

"All of us are groping to understand what's going on. For a useful first pass on history, consult Thomas Friedman."--Business Week

"Required reading for anyone who still thinks of the Internet as little more than a gimmick for computer nerds--deftly accomplishes the impressive task of encapsulating the complex economic, cultural, and environmental challenges of globalization with the sort of hindsight that future historians will bring to bear upon the subject."--The Christian Science Monitor -- Review

Great and insightful when first written, but feels dated today3
I admire Friedman's intellect, his decades of hands-on, in-the-trenches reporting all over the world (and especially in the Mideast). And he writes so clearly, colorfully and with energy. When this was first written, it was a novel perspective on what was happening in globalization of trade, communications, entertainment, etc.

The updates to the book, to make it relevant to our post-9/11 world, are helpful but they feel like an afterthought. The main meat of the book is still largely true but the occasional tone of gee-whiz enthusiasm about the internet, global trade deals etc. seems pretty dated to me now.

    Pseudo-Economics and Market Fundamentalism2
I read part of this book for a Globalization class I was taking, plus a few chapters from a different book "Globalization and Its Discontents" by Joseph Stiglitz. I initially liked what I read from Friedman. It seemed positive and interesting in comparison to Stiglitz (which focused on IMF economic policies and was VERY angry). However, upon reading the whole Stiglitz book and then going back to Friedman, I found Friedman to be poorly educated in economics and a waste of my time. It is indeed a cheerleader book for Globalization and has so many holes in it you can drive a car through.

Friedman is a market fundamentalist with an agenda, which becomes very clear after reading a REAL book on economics. He embraces this "golden straightjacket" (or restrictions that globalization puts on an economy) as inevitable and advocates a rapid transition to free-market systems with abandonment of old systems. He also favors excessive deregulation of the economy and wants government to completely relinquish control. The success of this strategy isn't backed by any evidence. It's only Friedman's theory. For instance, he goes into great detail about the hardships that this golden straitjacket puts on government, the population and all the entrenched interests... but never proves with evidence that the countries that put it on are better off than countries that don't. The fact is, countries DON'T have to follow this golden straitjacket model. Southeast Asia in particular... with all the "crony" capitalism that Friedman complains lingered on for decades, was successful before the 1997 market crisis specifically because of this crony capitalism. They didn't follow the IMF, Wall Street, and the electronic herd who were all clamoring for them to immediately open up their markets and push down barriers and completely eliminate government interference in the economy. They kept those barriers up, built up their own businesses and industries, and when those industries were ready to compete in the global market, they slowly reduced trade barriers and integrated themselves into the global economy. This is the correct way to approach globalization, not the stupid way Friedman and the IMF and Wall Street lobbyists advocate (ensuring US companies dominate ALL competition in the developing world).

I'll give another example of why Friedman is wrong. Look at Russia. Russia's transition from communism to capitalism was guided by the IMF and the US Treasury Department. It was one of the most radical transformations of an economy in the history of mankind and under Friedman's theory, it should have been an enormous success because "the quicker you adopt the golden straitjacket, the better". WRONG. They transitioned to free markets so quick that it was devoid of competition. There was no regulatory structure to compete fairly. Banks didn't operate well. Businesses were sold to well-connected, corrupt bureaucrats for next to nothing (who proceeded to strip the businesses of their assets and put most of the profits in foreign bank accounts). Corrupt government leaders shared in these profits at the expense of the state's wealth. The leaders further raided funds by taking out massive loans from international banks, the IMF and the US government at high interest rates and diverted much of the money into their bank accounts. Inflation ran wild for awhile and many people lost their life savings and retirement as a result. Exchange rates were kept artificially high which prevented exports. Crime and mafia control spread everywhere. People in abject poverty become commonplace (from ~2% of the population living under $2 a day under communism....... to after the market failure ~25% of the population under $2 a day and ~40% of the population under $4 a day. GDP per Capita went DOWN so people were poorer with capitalism than they were under communism). It was altogether complete chaos and an economic disaster.

Compare this with China, who also moved from Communism to Capitalism but they started in the 70's and they did it much slower and much more carefully. Through protectionist barriers, they built up their own industries, significantly reduced poverty, became a major world economy and provided many of the amenities that first world economies have. While they aren't completely free-market yet, they are doing it very well and completely ignoring Thomas Friedman's "Golden Straitjacket".

With that said, there are some good things about Thomas Friedman's book. First off, he explains a very popular... but failed... ideology very well. There is significant support for it in IMF, Wall Street and the Treasury Department and its important to understand. Secondly, he explains Capital Markets (or what he calls "short horned cattle") far better than my other book does. Capital Markets, or investment in currency, is a hard concept to understand and Friedman makes a very good effort at explaining it.

    Heavy3
Had some good ideas but pretty heavy reading. Not for the short attention span person.

    From the Back Cover
Having been rocked by one damaging revelation of misbehavior after another, Wall Street is in a state of crisis. Investors are disgusted by the misdeeds of a few and suspicious of the industry at large. Every firm finds its integrity open to question. Regulators are up in arms. And the industry is facing billions of dollars in costs to comply with a floodtide of new regulations.
But imagine what could happen if Wall Street firms looked back to a simpler time when a handshake was enough to seal a deal, and right and wrong were as clear as black and white. What if executives, portfolio managers, analysts, and traders decided that some things aren’t for sale? What if every major investment firm agreed to live by the principle that the client always comes first?
In words and images, Cowboy Ethics explores the life and code of the working cowboy as a source of inspiration pointing the industry to a way out of its troubles.
The book is intended as the catalyst for a movement to transform the industry – not with the carrot and stick, but from the inside out – one person, firm, and organization at a time.

Cowboy Ethics isn't just for cowboys!5
I read this book and gave it as a graduation gift. Then I showed it to my horses' hoof trimmer and he had me order five more copies for him to give as gifts. The photography is beautiful and the message is one that all of us should live by. I haven't read the next book, Cowboy Values, yet but am looking forward to it too.

    Cowboy Ethics5
Very accurate in terms of the "cowboy" expectations of society. Truth, honesty, taking responsibility are always on the forefront. Without those characteristics you don't get far with animals or people.

    Distills the Basics5
Between Mr. Owen's words and Mr. Stoecklein's great photographs, one will find a great little book of distilled genius---for any industry. I've given this book as a gift to my children and clients alike. Most could learn from the "Cowboy Code" described---and most would thrive. If you're casting about for a young person, and if they like ponies and cowboys---get this book---and read it---the words are just as compelling as the photographs. There's a lot we could learn from the "simple" life of cowboys. Good stuff. Timeless wisdom----to be used.

    A lot of money for 58 small/blow-up pages1
Sorry.. but this was a sham ! barely 58 pages of info. now remember, this is a pocket guide.. Quite a rip-off ! Go on line and print off same information for ZIP ! Shame on you Amazon..

    Diabetic Pocket Guide1
Truthfully, this book is so thin that it is a waste of $5.95...Go to the library and check out something similar for free and photocopy what you need...I will never use the book I bought -- same info is readily available online and elsewhere.

    diabetic help, not 1
I have to say that I was a bit set back when I received this booklet,The Official Pocket Guide for Diabetics. I was expecting something a bit more helpful for someone who had just been diagnosed with Diabetes.
I suppose that it is ok, but would not recommend paying more than a couple of dollars for this product.
I wound up going to another bookstore and purchasing a much more concise and helpful book.
